WCWI to host second Nontraditional Career Day for Wyoming girls

ROCK SPRINGS - The Wyoming Council for Women’s Issues (WCWI) and Western Wyoming Community College (WWCC) will host the second Nontraditional Career Day for Wyoming female high school students from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 12 at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs.

Nontraditional Career Day is free to all girls grades 9-12 in Wyoming.  The purpose of the event is to show young Wyoming women well-paying, nontraditional careers that exist in this state.  Traditionally, many of these jobs are not ones that are associated with women.

This year’s program focuses on a wide variety of interactive workshops, ranging from welding to pharmacy.  Over 40 different workshops will offer speakers sharing real-world experiences.  The keynote speaker is Kim de Groh, a NASA engineer.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to visit with a number of exhibitors showcasing various industries and organizations.  Continental breakfast and lunch are provided.  Door prizes are also available.

The WCWI initiated the first Nontraditional Job Fair in Oct. 2006 in response to Wyoming having the largest wage disparity by gender in the U.S.  Over 540 young women participated last year.

Pre-registration for the event is required.  To register or to view a complete agenda, visit www.wwcc.wy.edu/careerday.  For more information, contact event chair Dr. Michelle D. Aldrich, WCWI at teachwyo@yahoo.com or Peg Larson, WWCC at 307-382-1828 or plarson@wwcc.wy.edu.

The WCWI is a 13-member council with representation from each of the nine Judicial Districts in addition to four at-large members and one ex-officio member from the Wyoming Business Council. The WCWI is a Governor appointed council.
